Speakers Announced for Built Ecologies Guest Lecture Series on AI and the Future of the Built Environment

March 8, 2024

The Built Ecologies program at the Center for Architecture, Science, and Ecology (CASE) has issued a complete schedule for its Spring 2024 Guest Lecture Series.

Speakers will present current research on a robust range of topics regarding the impact of AI technology critical to the future of built environment.

All lectures will be held virtually on this link via Webex.

First up, on Monday, March 11 at 1 p.m. EDT, Fengqi Li, a postdoctoral research associate at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), will present “Exploring INFOMORPHic Existence: From Design Computation to Energy and Beyond,” his work studying the interactions of cities and their environments and people to address challenges like climate change and urban living. Li, who received his Ph.D. from CASE, was recently featured in a story on the ORNL website.

On Monday, March 25 at 1 p.m. EDT, Fatima Javeed, a current Ph.D. candidate at Georgia Institute of Technology and former assistant professor at the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore who pioneered the incorporation of computational design into her curriculum and research, will present “Semantic Data Modeling for Sentient Systems: Enabling Holistic Knowledge-based Automation.”  In 2014, Javeed co-authored "Conservation of Tomb of Khan-e-Dauran," showcasing her commitment to both the preservation of architectural heritage in Pakistan and the advancement of digital methodologies.

On Monday, April 8 at 1 p.m. EDT, Diyanko Bhowmik, a Ph.D. candidate in Electrical, Computer, and Systems Engineering at Rensselaer, will present “Sensor Fusion Techniques Using Transfer Learning for Human Occupancy Sensing.”  Bhowmik is studying human occupancy sensing techniques at RPI’s Lighting Enabled Systems and Applications (LESA) research center under LESA Director Bob Karlicek.

Finally, on Monday, April 22 at 1 p.m. EDT, Constantina Varsami, a sustainability analyst at Corgan, will discuss her research, “Ecological Design Thinking,” that explores the intersection of architecture, engineering, and ecology. Varsami fuses design with science and technology by establishing trans-disciplinary academic and research collaborations.

The Spring 2024 CASE Guest Lecture Series is directed and organized by Jihoon Chung, a current CASE Ph.D. candidate studying with CASE Director Dennis Shelden. Chung, who uses data to improve simulation performance about human behavior in buildings, is currently conducting a fellowship at Berkeley Laboratory under the tutalege of Tianzhen Hong.
