Youngjin Hwang is currently a student in the Ph.D. of Architectural Science program at CASE, where he researches advanced building energy systems and explores a new way to address the use of energy in architectural design. He holds a B.Arch and M.Arch II from Hanyang University (Seoul, South Korea) with the President’s Award and the Award of the President of Hanyang Architecture Alumni Association. He has worked in Gansam Architects & Partners as an architect and a building performance specialist for several years.  He also holds a Master of Environmental Building Design from the University of Pennsylvania and has worked at PennDesign’s Center for Environmental Building & Design (CEBD) for building energy-related projects. He has received a number of awards in architectural design and building performance-related competitions, such as the AWR International Design Competition (Italy) and the Seoul Architectural Award (South Korea).

In his research work, Youngjin develops a novel multi-functional building component that integrates building structure, thermal systems, and control systems into one prefabricated module to resolve current building energy issues. His research aims to not only reduce building energy consumption but also take energy into the architectural design as both quantitative and qualitative matter.
