GRADUATE PROGRAMS

Master of Science in Architectural Sciences
Built Ecologies Concentration

The Master of Science in Architectural Sciences with a concentration in built ecologies is one of three concentrations within the masters and doctoral program in Architectural Sciences. The program is designed to develop knowledge and expertise in the development of radically new buildings systems, structures, and environments that are informed by the behavior of natural systems and/or performance characteristics of emergent technologies. The aim is to develop performance driven design techniques and solutions to building system design based on an understanding that the built world can and should operate synergistically within larger ecologies, and that it also may act as one.

The Master of Science program requires 30 credit hours and is normally expected to be completed in one year of study.

Doctorate in Architectural Sciences
Built Ecologies Concentration

The School of Architecture offers the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Architectural Sciences to candidates who are prepared to undertake innovative and substantive research that adds to the body of knowledge drawn on by the design disciplines. The degree is aimed at producing a context for advanced study and research which combine architecture and appropriate areas of science, engineering, and the humanities. The Architectural Sciences (built ecologies concentration) is an inherently interdisciplinary program.

The Doctor of Philosophy program requires 72 credit hours beyond the bachelor’s; 42 credit hours beyond the Master’s.

APPLICATION AND ADMISSIONS
Individuals applying for admission to this program must have the equivalent of a Bachelor’s degree in a related field. Those with other advanced degrees and/or experience (e.g., who have worked in the field) and with keen interest in built ecologies may be considered.

Prospective students apply for an MS/PhD within the Program in Architectural Sciences (MS/PhD, ARCS). For those who may already hold the MS who wish to pursue PhD studies directly, contact the Program Chair in advance of applying. Applicants are required to submit a portfolio and should submit a statement of interest that may include some examples of analytical or creative work relevant to their interest in built ecologies.

Please see the Graduate Admissions web site for information about applying to RPI, the on-line application and a list of required documents:
http://admissions.rpi.edu/graduate. All credentials should be sent directly to Rensselaer Graduate Admissions at 110 8th Street, Troy, NY 12180.

Financial Assistance

Graduate admission is competitive; financial assistance in the form of fellowships and assistantships is available to the most highly qualified applicants. Additional application forms are not required. Graduate assistantships and fellowships provide both a full tuition scholarship and a generous stipend. Both U.S. and international applicants are considered for assistance.
